Kit yourself our correctly this January.

January is approaching, and without a doubt that always brings with it a rush to get back into a good exercise routine. It’s what we all need in the dark depths of Jan, a good rush of exercise endorphins! We know getting back into exercise, whether that is re-starting couch to 5K for the 10th time, making a return to the gym, or starting a brand-new exercise class, can be a bit scary.

One thing we know is that the right gym apparel is key in ensuring a comfortable workout experience. Therefore we are highlighting some of the key things to look out for when choosing your activewear.

Correct fitting sports bras are a must.

Even when understanding your measurements, finding the right sports bra can be tricky. There are many different aspects of a sports bra that determine both its comfort and support, some of which are often overlooked. Here at Untamed, we stock two main types of sports bras. The first ones are compression sports bras. These are usually best for those who require light or moderate support or have smaller cup sizes. The second type is encapsulation sports bras. These support each breast individually and are often better for those with a larger cup size. Ultimately, with sports bra's you need to try them. We offer 60-day returns on all sports bras giving you enough time to try them on and get a good sense of feel before making the decision to take them to your next workout.

Finally, remember that sports bra's do not last forever. A good sports bra should do you 30-40 washes. The maximise the life of your sports bra wash on a cold wash and avoid fabric softener or bleach and lay them flat to dry.

So here is what to look out for when choosing your sports bra.

For both types of bra. They should be snug but not restrictive. It should feel tighter than your regular bra but not so much that it affects your movement. The sports bra underband should be smooth with no wrinkles and it should sit comfortably below your breasts. To test this, raise your hands up into an overhead position. If it rides up, it is likely the wrong size. Furthermore, look out for chaffing, irritation, pain or discomfort. You need to move around in your sports bra first. If any of these persist, then it is probably not right for you. Choosing the right material with minimal stitching can also help here (as we explain below).

Choose the right leggings for your body shape.

There is nothing worse than having to continually pull up your leggings during a workout. Now, here is the thing. 90% of leggings are manufactured to a template. The seams will sit in the same position, the leg lengths will be the same and the widths of the waistbands are consistent. However, as every one of us is different, leggings will not always sit on you the way they sit on someone else. This means that you are not always guaranteed that leggings will not slip or ride up at the legs, however, there are things you can do to help minimise this distraction.

Firstly, ensure you don't oversize. The main reason for the waistband slipping is that your leggings are too big. Leggings that are made with a mixture of nylon and spandex are extremely stretchy. Therefore always size down if you are unsure.

In addition, choosing the right leg length can be important. We are one of the few boutique brands that offer a longer leg length. The extra 2 inches on the leg can be more suitable for those with longer legs or a taller frame. Our Tall leggings also have a larger waistband which allows the top seam to sit above the glutes and not on top. This can help to minimise slippage.

Finally, consider looking for leggings with a larger waistband. Our Super High leggings have about an extra 2cm than our essential leggings. These give more coverage and sit higher on the stomach which in turn reduces the risk of slipping.

Consider sweat-wicking material.

The majority of our clothing is made from a blend of nylon and spandex. This provides moisture-wicking properties that can really help make you more comfortable when you begin your exercise regime. The moisture-wicking fabric allows moisture to easily travel from your body to your clothes’ exterior. This can help your perspiration evaporate from your clothes and keep you dry. In addition, they are also incredibly easy to care for and can last a long time if you follow the correct care instructions.

Get the right clothes for your exercise routine.

Ensuring that you get the right style of clothes for your exercise routine, can ensure you have maximum comfort and support whilst allow allowing freedom of movement to do what you enjoy.

Firstly, think does my exercise plan have a lot of dynamic movement. For example, if you are taking part in something high intensity like CrossFit, the likelihood is you are going to move a lot. Therefore restrictive tee's that ride up when you put your arms overhead are not going to be suitable. Try a racerback vest or a tank top to ensure that you can easily move around without being impacted. Also, are you going to be doing lots of burpees, then maybe consider darker colours as regular washing of whites may cause them to lose colour.

Secondly, consider how many times you work out during a week. If you are walking once a week, then a couple of activewear sets should be sufficient. However, if you are working our 5 times a week for double sessions, then you are going to need a wide range of activewear that is suitable for each individual workout.

Finally, think about layering up if you need to. Ensuring the body is optimised for exercise goes far beyond a simple warm-up. Keep yourself protected from the elements by ensuring you include enough layers.
